Foundation designs are based on the assumed bearing capacity of the soil at the building site (see  Table 7 ). In construction sites where settlement is not a problem, shallow foundations provide the most economical foundation systems. Shallow foundation construction is typically utilized for most residential and light commercial raised floor building sites.

Obviously there are disadvantages with stud walls (timber walls) the main one probably been sound issues, but with well installed insulation the sound difference should not be too bad.

Perhaps the simplest foundation is the padstone, a single stone which both spreads the weight on the ground and raises the timber off the ground. [6] Staddle stones are a specific type of padstones.
